Gifts of Securities
Donating publicly traded stock and securities directly to the Northern Cancer Foundation is a tax-smart way to support our mission.
You will receive a tax receipt for the full appreciated value of a donation of publicly traded stock or securities, and you will not have to pay capital gains tax. Conversely, if you cash in the securities yourself with a view of donating the proceeds, 50% of the gain will be taxable.
In other words, it is more advantageous to transfer stock directly to the NCF than to cash it and make a donation.
As an example, please consider the following:
|Selling Securities & Donating the Proceeds||Donating Securities Directly|
|Current Market Value||$10,000||$10,000|
|Cost of Shares||$4,000||$4,000|
|Capital Gain Taxes*||$1,392.30||$0|
|Funds available for Donation||$8,607.70||$10,000|
